Hyatt Brand Explorer: The Punch Card For Free Hotel Nights

Hyatt is much more than just the Hyatt hotel brand. In fact, they have 28 brands and over 1,350 properties across their worldwide portfolio. This includes less expensive brands like Hyatt House and Hyatt Place all the way up to the luxurious Park Hyatt and all-inclusive resorts. While competitors like Hilton and Marriott also have large portfolios, Hyatt sets itself apart in how it entices you to try all their brands. Enter the World of Hyatt Brand Explorer program.

Think of it like a punch card program, but instead of earning a free drink at your local smoothie shop, you’re earning free hotel nights worth a lot more! Let’s get into the details.

How Hyatt Brand Explorer Works

For every 5 unique Hyatt brands you stay at, Hyatt will give you a Category 1-4 free night certificate. This goes for the lifetime of your Hyatt account, so you can currently earn up to 5 free nights this way if you stayed at 25 brands. The Hyatt gods could also add new brands to the portfolio in the future, and if they reach 30, you’d be able to get 6 free nights by staying at every one.

All of the brands under World of Hyatt

As an example, staying at the Hyatt Regency in Denver and then the Hyatt Regency in Chicago would only count as 1 brand (Hyatt Regency). If you have even a little flexibility in your travel, it may be worth booking a new brand to work towards a free night. Just in downtown Chicago there are 14 different Hyatt hotels across 8 different brands!

The Fine Print

There are a few key things to know about Hyatt Brand Explorer. First, all types of bookings count, whether you paid with cash, points, a mix of both, or a free night certificate. You could potentially use 5 free nights at different brands to earn yet another free night!

Unlike a lot of other hotel promotions I’ve seen floating around the past few years, Hyatt Brand Explorer also only requires you to stay 1 night at each property. This is great if you take quick trips, like to move around a lot on your trips, or just want to spend one night at a luxury hotel to keep total costs down.

Progress towards Hyatt Brand Explorer free night

You’ll earn points and qualifying nights on all stays at new brands as normal. The Hyatt Brand Explorer promotion has no effect on other earnings.

The biggest downside to be aware of is that not every Hyatt property participates in the Brand Explorer program. Now, the vast majority of Hyatt’s properties do participate, so this issue is pretty rare.

It’s important to note that the Hyatt Brand Explorer free night certificate expires 12 months after you earn it. You must actually complete a qualifying stay within those 12 months, not just book it.

How to Track Your Progress

Hyatt makes it really simple to track your Brand Explorer progress in your account. Log into your account and go to Membership > My Awards > Brand Explorer and click the “+” to expand the section to show you the brands where you’ve completed stays. Brands that are grayed out are ones you have yet to visit.

After you’ve completed 5 eligible stays, it may take a few weeks for the Free Night Certificate to show up in your account, though data points indicate it’s often much faster.

Where You Can Redeem the Free Night

As I mentioned, the Hyatt Brand Explorer reward is a Category 1-4 free night certificate. Hyatt divides up their properties into 8 categories, with 1 as their lowest end properties and 8 as the highest. There are plenty of great properties in Categories 1-4. Note that you cannot use a Category 1-4 free night certificate at all-inclusive properties.

Hyatt Award Chart

The maximum value of the Category 1-4 free night certificate is 18,000 points if you stay at a Category 4 property during peak dates, but the dollar value of those 18,000 points can vary widely. I definitely view these certificates as valuable and worth earning.

Any status you have when you stay at a property with a free night certificate is still applicable and you’ll receive all associated benefits.

It may seem confusing to figure out which hotels are classified in which categories, but Hyatt has a Hotel Explorer tool where you can filter by region and category. You can then see a map or list view of all potential properties.

Alternatively, you can run a search with points and just look for those under 18,000 points/night.

Here are just a few examples of where you could use a Hyatt Category 1-4 Free Night Certificate:

Other Ways to Earn Free Nights

Hyatt Brand Explorer is only one way to stay at Hyatt hotels for free, but there are others that aren’t unique to Hyatt.

One way to stay for free is to book your stay with points. Points can be earned from stays or from credit cards. The World of Hyatt credit card earns Hyatt points directly on all spending, but points can also be transferred from Chase Ultimate Rewards or Bilt points.

The other way is earning more free night certificates. One way to do this is through the World of Hyatt credit card, which earns one Category 1-4 Free Night Certificate each year, with the potential to earn another if you spend $15,000 on the card annually.

Earning elite nights and status is the other way to earn these certificates. You get a Category 1-4 Certificate when you earn 30 elite nights in a calendar year and a Category 1-7 Certificate when you earn 60 elite nights (and earn Globalist status). However, certificates earned via elite nights expire in 180 days, so be sure to use them quickly!

Obviously with 8 categories, even the Category 1-7 Certificate won’t get you a room at some of the most ultra-luxurious properties in the Hyatt portfolio. Good news is you can still book those with points!

Final Thoughts on Hyatt Brand Explorer

I love the Hyatt Brand Explorer promotion and wish other big hotel chains would join in the fun. Staying at a new Hyatt brand is not the biggest deciding factor when I’m booking a hotel, but it’s certainly something I consider. If you estimate the value of the certificate at $250, each of the 5 qualifying stays to effectively gives you $50 back in the long run.
